Activities for all
With some 60 beaches there is something for everyone: there are the rugged beaches of the Atlantic coast, like Bathsheba, ideal for surfing and picnics amongst the dunes. The pink sands and dramatic cliffs of the world renowned Crane beach to the south. Mullins backs on to the busy coast road but is popular with youngsters for its lively beach with giant inflatables. We believe you’ll find it hard to beat our own beach at the Fairmont, right on Lumiere’s doorstep.
Barbados is home, in the eyes of many, to some of the most exciting, flamboyant cricket the sporting world has ever seen. Cricket lovers will have noted by now that Lumiere is just 20 miles from the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. A taxi there is convenient and assures a memorable sporting day out at this cricketing cathedral. Away from the professional game, on a Caribbean island an impromptu game of beach cricket is always a moment away.
Lumiere is ideally situated for those who enjoy a little activity while on holiday. Tennis, sea fishing, diving, snorkelling and watersports are well catered for. At the Fairmont beach (and others) you'll find simple sailing facilities and jet skis, not to mention water skiing and boat rides. Golfers have a choice of exceptional courses at Royal Westmoreland (more or less across the road), Apes Hill and the Barbados Golf Club.
Turtle Tip
The warm, clear waters are home to many turtles - green, hawksbill and leatherback varieties. There are organised boat trips that allow you to swim with them at various spots. But these are often expensive and ‘impersonal’. Our tip is to grab a mask and snorkel and head to the Fairmont beach... there’s a spot close to shore where you can jump in and join them.
Shopping
Holetown (just 5 minutes drive) is home to a great supermarket - even stocking Waitrose products! - as well as smaller shops and a department store. The Limegrove shopping centre here features upscale boutiques and brands, not to mention a state of the art cinema. The colourful Chattel Village offers a collection of little craft shops, ideal for those holiday mementoes.
Bridgetown (20 miles) offers a wide range of shopping while to the north (10 minutes drive) Speightstown is an eclectic mix of modern shopping and colonial charm.
Eating
Barbados is unmatched when it comes to offering culinary variety and quality. Whether you’re looking for high-end gourmet cuisine or authentic Bajan with down to earth flavours and prices, it’s all on the doorstep. At Ju Ju's on the Fairmont beach, you can stroll up (with sandy feet!) and enjoy a sunset rum punch, followed by a platter of flying fish and perhaps some macaroni pie - a fine way to end the day.
Alternatively, enjoy a memorable night out at the likes of Tides or The Cliff or Lone Star , just minutes from Lumiere and offering stylish and inventive cuisine with a Caribbean twist.
Sightseeing
There is more to Barbados than sun, sea and sand. Rich in history and with colonial links to Britain dating back to 1625, there is a unique history to explore. St Nicholas Abbey, north-east on Highway 1, dates from the 17th century and gives a fascinating insight into plantation life. The island offers a number of lush tropical and botanical gardens, plantations and nature reserves to explore.
In addition there is always the unique appeal of a tour of a rum distillery. Mount Gay (in Bridgetown) is the island's oldest distiller and the tour is ever popular.
